Hooray for Black Friday!

Hooray for Black Friday!

By Emily Hayes

It’s that time of year again. The day after we express our thanks and gratitude for all of our blessings and then we gorge ourselves. And then we wake up at the crack of dawn the next day to stand in long lines and find our favorite items at huge discounts! I mean, who doesn’t love the thrill of sprinting through a department store to be the first to get your hands on that credenza you’ve been eyeing all year? Talk about an adrenaline rush!

If you’re like me, you might be wondering how did this groundbreaking day start and where did the name “Black Friday” even originate? In relation to retail, Black Friday was created in the 1960s as a kick-off to the inevitable holiday shopping season. The name is a reference to accounting. In that corner of the office, red refers to a loss and black refers to a profit. Get it? Black Friday means profits for the company, companies, stores, manufacturers and let’s face it, it’s a bonus for shoppers too.

Once retailers started to realize they could draw large crowds with discounted prices, Black Friday became THE day for holiday shopping. According to this article on blackfriday.com (where else?), 116 million people planned to shop on Black Friday last year. It’s become so popular that instead of businesses waiting until the day after Thanksgiving to start their sales, many are now advertising early Black Friday sales. It’s not very traditional, but profits are profits and this year consumers are expected to spend an average of $504 on Black Friday (up from $472 last year).
